Ekadashi | 8 November 2019 | Everything to know about

In Hinduism and Jainism, Ekadashi is considered a very spiritual day and is observed by partial fast.

Fruit, vegetables, and milk products are eaten by the people. This fasting starts from sunrise on the day of Ekadashi to sunset on the following day of Ekasdashi.

The timing of each Ekadashi is according to the position of the moon in the Hindu calendar. The Hindu calendar marks the progression from a full moon to a new moon as divided into fifteen equal arcs. Each arc measures one lunar day called a tithi. Ekadashi refers to the 11th tithi, or lunar day in the Hindu calendar. In the bright half of the lunar month, the moon will appear roughly 75 percent full on Ekadashi, and in the dark half of the lunar month, the moon will be about 75 percent dark on Ekadashi. There are usually 24 Ekadashis in a calendar year. Two extra Ekadashis happen in a leap year.

Bhagavata Purana from Hinduism notes the observation of Ekadashi by Ambarisha, a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Each Ekadashi day is meant to have particular benefits and blessings that are attained by the performance of specific activities.
